I’ve finally graduated from university in creative writing. Well, to be fair, it was official a while ago but I actually have the diploma to prove it now. I spent the better part of my day in a stuffy hall with 500 of my peers (of which I only recognized six), dressed in heavy black robes that made us all look like we were off to Hogwarts. All of the women had sleek dresses, high heels, and amazing hair and makeup. The men had their pressed shirts, dress pants, and polished shoes on.
And there I was without any makeup, my hair tangled, in a sundress and tennis shoes.
I was okay with that though. My friend Lambert keeps reminding me to do things my way, and I definitely took his advice to heart when it came to today. I’m starting to think I should listen to him more…
Anyways, it was an amazing day. I got my diploma, ordered my class ring, got some truly beautiful gifts (flowers, Pandora, an engraved pen, oh my!), and then had a wonderful lunch with my family. It was a perfect day and I’m so grateful for it.
I also have to admit that I thought this day would never come. I left university three years ago to pursue nursing, taking only one writing class in the evenings, and I’d honestly thought that was the end of my university career.
But something pulled me back to writing, and I’m so glad it did. I don’t know that I’d be so happy or fulfilled in my life if I’d done anything else with it.
I can’t wait to start this next chapter of my life, or rather officially start it. And as much as I loved school, I’m happy it’s finally over.
Well, until I go back for my Graduate degree that is…
